MOXI: A Community of Play and Possibility

Since opening in 2017, MOXI has established itself as a vibrant hub for playful learning, dedicated to fostering curiosity, creativity, and a sense of belonging. Our success revolves around meeting community needs and cultivating meaningful programs that allow kids and families to flourish.

At MOXI, a sense of community is in our DNA. We collaborate closely with schools and local organizations to experience the benefits of STEAM through play. Thanks to our interactive exhibits and innovative programs, we work to ensure that all community members – regardless of background – can access top-quality educational experiences.

Our commitment to community extends beyond our immediate surroundings. We actively partner with other museums and cultural institutions across the country, including the Association of Children’s Museums and the Association of Science and Technology Centers, sharing knowledge and resources to enhance our visitor experience and collective impact. Within MOXI, we prioritize staff wellness to maintain a supportive and thriving work environment.

You are vital to making this possible. Here’s to many more years of discovery together.

Onward!

Letter from the Board Chair

Play matters.

I am delighted to celebrate MOXI’s sixth year of operation in 2023, a year filled with innovation, discovery, and curiosity. This journey has been extraordinary, and our success is deeply rooted in the vibrant community that surrounds and supports us. The relationships that make this museum run also empower children, thanks to shared values of critical thinking and innovation.

Your support has enabled us to inspire and engage over one million guests from all over the country. We look forward to continuing to make a difference in the lives of children and families in Santa Barbara, and beyond, with a world-class facility and top-notch educational programs that will continue to grow and thrive along with our guests. I am excited for our bright future ahead.

Thank you for your dedication to MOXI. Together, we will continue to inspire a new generation.

MUSEUM
HAPPENINGS

MOXI is , offering state-of-the-art museum facilities that inspire exploration, learning, and creativity for all ages.

MOXI is a cornerstone of the community, offering state-of-the-art museum facilities that inspire exploration, learning, and creativity for all ages.

Temporary Exhibits

Hands on… Feet on… Lights on. 2023’s exhibit experiences offered a fresh take on “hands-on” learning.

Big Blue Blocks, MOXI Tots, and Seaside Sock Skating allowed visitors to use their whole bodies to learn, build, slide, and climb. Innovation Wall partners showcased local renewable technologies, hyper-community programming, and ocean rehabilitation projects. We brought the A in STEAM to life with temporary art installations showcasing organizations innovating through creativity.

Climate Change Awareness Expo

Engaging the next generation of climate crusaders

This family-friendly program featured ice-themed activities encouraging climate action. Local partners shared their expert climate change knowledge, research, and interactive activities throughout the museum.

Thank you to event partners: The City of Santa Barbara, Axiom Climate, UCSB Professor Hugo Loaiciga, The California Global Education Project, Rori’s Artisanal Creamery, The Community Environmental Council

Seaside Sock Skating

Winter just got a whole lot cooler.

Seaside Sock Skating made its debut just before Thanksgiving, carving out a key space in Santa Barbara’s winter landscape.

Visitors from across Southern California – slid over to MOXI in record numbers, generating lots of buzz for our new holiday experience on social media and in the press. Kids and adults kicked off their shoes to enjoy the frictionless fun at several special events, including the Climate Change Awareness Expo, Happy Hour, and extended winter break hours.

One of MOXI’s educational goals is to empower kids to take risks and try new things, whether that is in the form of building electrical circuits or gliding on synthetic ice.

COLLABORATING WITH LOCAL SCHOOLS

Working together to build for all.

MOXI is actively collaborating with local schools to enhance educational opportunities and inspire the next generation of innovators.

Afterschool Program

In Santa Barbara County, one in four children faces the harsh reality of poverty, which can limit their access to enriching experiences like visiting MOXI. To bridge this gap, we bring supplemental STEAM activities directly to school sites, ensuring these young minds are not left behind. During the 2023-2024 academic year, fifth and sixth graders from 10 schools within the Santa Barbara Unified and Goleta Union School Districts participated in a six-week afterschool program. MOXI’s engaging curriculum, centered around open-ended design challenges, empowers students to develop critical skills in STEAM disciplines through playful, creative, and collaborative problem-solving activities.

“Partners like MOXI are crucial to enhancing student growth, bridging learning gaps, and providing opportunities to grow in critical thinking, perseverance, and STEM identity.”

Field Trips

MOXI’s Field Trip program epitomizes our mission by integrating educational adventures into the school day, greatly expanding our reach. These trips transform classroom lessons into interactive experiences, igniting students’ curiosity and enthusiasm for learning. Through our Accessibility Fund, we provide free field trips to eligible Title I schools and offer discounts to students, ensuring broader access.

MOXI made an everlasting impression on our students and provided them with a hands-on experience they can continue to build on at school.

They loved the engineering portion. This part will help them to make connections with science and work on their perseverance.

Field Trip Survey

I had several kids say this was their best field trip ever, and several asked if we could come back!

Field Trip Survey Data

In the past year, 11,814 students participated in 266 field trips, with 73% of those students coming from Title I schools.

INFORMAL LEARNING PROGRAMS

MOXI is , providing engaging and interactive experiences that ignite curiosity and foster a lifelong love of discovery.

MOXI is a community hub providing engaging and interactive experiences that ignite curiosity and foster a lifelong love of discovery.

MOXI strives to make science fun and accessible to everyone through exciting public programs.

From engaging toddlers at Toddler Tuesday to encouraging adults to embrace their inner child during Happy Hour and Afterparty events, these programs broaden our reach and inspire people of all ages.

Public Programs + Events

Noon Year’s Eve got even comfier as guests partied in their pajamas. Members got to save the galaxy during MOXI’s Revenge of the Fifth Family Party. Afterparty and Happy Hour invited kids-at-heart to enjoy the facilities after hours.

This year, we launched new programs to inspire and engage our community. Dot Day encourages children to leave their unique mark through creative expression (and matches MOXI’s Orange Dot!). Family Pride Weekend celebrates LGBTQIA+ STEAM innovators with fun, science-focused activities. We also expanded our beloved Toddler Tuesday offerings with more themes and activities for our youngest visitors.

Camps

In addition to STEAM programming, MOXI’s camps are all about building strong, well-rounded kids. These camps are crafted to inspire curiosity, embrace challenges, and nurture creative thinking. Kids get to explore, discover, and feel empowered every step of the way.

“I believe that it’s so important to provide the opportunity for youngsters to attend these camps that otherwise could not. It’s not just the camp and its learning experiences that are important, it’s also their ability to socialize and make relationships and memories that will influence them in the future.”

CCLI helps museums boost diversity, inclusion, and equity. MOXI leadership spent a year in a course to advance these goals and refined materials with our cohort.

Kaia Joye and Robin presented at the Association of Childrens' Museums annual conference

Four members of the staff attended the conference in New Orleans, including two new team members. What better way to join the world of children’s museums than by collaborating with the industry at large?

“MOXI is fortunate to have a tremendous leader in Robin. She is an inspiration for all of us at MOXI and the greater Santa Barbara community.”
