Dear MOXI Friends + Supporters,

MOXI is growing up, thanks to you!

As we celebrate seven years of sparking curiosity in Santa Barbara and beyond, we’re proud of the impact your support has made.

With over one million guests through our doors, MOXI has become a hub of exploration, learning, and joyful discovery. In 2024, we expanded camps, deepened school partnerships, and extended our reach — making hands-on STEAM learning more accessible than ever.

Your generosity fuels this momentum. You’re not just supporting a museum, you’re investing in the future of young innovators, thinkers, and creators.

We’re moving full STEAM ahead — with you by our side.

Full STEAM Ahead, Growing Together

At MOXI, we build lasting relationships with visitors by creating meaningful, joyful experiences that grow with each return visit.

In 2024, we strengthened connections through improved guest experiences, including a streamlined ticketing portal, extended evening hours during school breaks, weekly Saturday morning Member playtimes, and a new Mamava lactation pod. As we nurture the bonds between staff and visitors, children and adults, and among campers, we're not just witnessing growth—we're powering it, full STEAM ahead.

MOXI welcomed our one millionth visitor on June 20, 2024.

Welcoming one million visitors to MOXI is a testament to the museum’s continued public interest and support, and its critical role in fostering curiosity, creativity, and a love for science.

The winning guest received a gift package from the Museum Store including STEAM toys, MOXI merch, and gift certificates from museum partners and nearby restaurants.

What an accomplishment! We’re thrilled to have become such an integral part of the Santa Barbara experience and a trusted resource for science learning and look forward to many years of fun and discovery ahead.”

Robin Gose, Ed.D., MOXI President + CEO

Measurement Rules!

MOXI welcomed Measurement Rules from June 15 – September 22, 2024, transforming much of the museum’s second floor into a playground for mathematical exploration. The traveling exhibit asked guests:  how many chickens do you weigh? How tall are you in apples, inches, or pennies? Can you use your foot as a ruler?

Measurement Rules was created by Children’s Museum of Pittsburgh.

Sponsors Rule! Thank you to our Measurement Rules Lead Sponsor:
The Ann Jackson Family Foundation.

And a special thank you for the generous support provided by: CAPTRUST + Movegreen + The Santa Barbara Independent.

Light Track’s glow-up

Informed by an Exhibit Master Plan, the reimagined Light Track powered up as MOXI’s first major exhibit transformation. MOXI friends and supporters celebrated with a ribbon-cutting on November 25. This first installation was made possible by MOXI’s Board of Directors and showcases the museum’s commitment to evolving and enhancing its educational experiences. Further transformations will continue for the next few years, with naming opportunities available.

Supporting MOXI’s Exhibit Master Plan was an investment in the future of hands-on learning and innovation. We are proud to support MOXI’s mission as it evolves to engage even more young minds in this exciting, dynamic environment."

New exhibits take flight at Santa Barbara Airport

A new, permanent interactive experience for kids and families is now open at Santa Barbara Airport, taking fun and learning to new heights. We are thrilled to extend our mission beyond museum walls with this installation, as passengers can explore a hands-on sensory experience with an Airplane Color Mixing Wheel, Talk Tubes, and a Tactile Marble Wall while watching airplanes take off.

This partnership with MOXI exemplifies the power of community collaboration in enhancing the traveler experience. The exhibit reflects our shared commitment to innovation and enriching connections with those we serve."

Chris Hastert, Airport Director

Skate on up!

MOXI’s Seaside Sock Skating rink is sliding up the list of must-do holiday events in Santa Barbara.

MOXI's work is recognized as an approved Environmental Partner by 1% for the Planet. As a Certified Green Business – and an organization that is passionate about planetary wellness – we're proud to be part of this distinguished network.

EDUCATION + OUTREACH

Collaborating with Local Schools

MOXI is forging stronger bonds with local schools, bringing interactive learning experiences directly to students throughout the community. We're meeting students where they are and expanding our educational reach, cultivating the next generation of creative thinkers and problem-solvers.

Field Trips

MOXI’s Field Trip program brings learning to life by transforming classroom concepts into interactive adventures. We provide free and discounted visits for Title I schools through MOXI’s Accessibility Fund, making educational experiences accessible to more students across the Central Coast.

Engineering for the planet with “Home Tweet Home”

Engineering Explorations are an additional facilitated, hands-on engineering program available for field trip students. “Home Tweet Home” is MOXI’s original curriculum, in which students engineer solutions to meet the needs of a very special flock of birds in a fun and whimsical field trip experience. This exercise helps students who love and care about the natural world understand how their personal choices can support a healthier planet.

Cultivating relationships with animals, both real and imagined, is one of the best ways to foster empathy in early childhood."

David Sobel, Professor Emeritus in the Education Department at Antioch University New England

Afterschool Program

Barriers to enriching experiences like visiting MOXI are still present for many families throughout Santa Barbara. We address this inequity by bringing staff and engaging STEAM activities directly to schools. 2024 was the second year of a two-year cycle aimed at reaching all interested schools in the area.

Thanks to this initiative, MOXI has now made engaging afterschool STEAM programming available to every fifth and sixth grade site in the Santa Barbara Unified, Goleta Unified, and Hope School Districts.

Thanks to the Harold McAlister Charitable Trust, Hearst Foundations, Towbes Foundation, and U.S. Bank for supporting MOXI’s 2024 afterschool program.

MOXI Camp

MOXI offers camps during the spring, summer, Thanksgiving, and winter breaks as an opportunity for children to explore a variety of STEAM topics, build creative confidence, and make new friends. These week-long camps use a narrative-based curriculum, which transforms educational content into meaningful stories. This makes learning more engaging, memorable, and fun! We work with the Police Activities League (PAL) to offer scholarships to children with demonstrated financial need for these transformative camp experiences.

Ready to Respond with Project:Camp

All full-time education staff were trained in December of 2024 on Adverse Childhood Experiences and the importance of the “first receiver” role as part of the first Project:Camp preparedness program offered in the region. This training turned out to be prescient as the group was quickly deployed in January 2025 during the tragic Los Angeles fires to work with children whose families evacuated to Santa Barbara. The MOXI team is now the largest response team in Santa Barbara County, and the first preparedness-trained counselors that have ever been deployed in a disaster, serving as a case study for both Project:Camp and Santa Barbara County.

The staff at MOXI demonstrated extraordinary compassion, flexibility, and commitment to community well-being. They helped transform crisis into care, and their actions reflect the very best of what community partnership can be."

Suzanne Grimmesey, MFT, PIO/Chief of Strategy and Community Engagement, Santa Barbara County Department of Behavioral Wellness

PUBLIC PROGRAMS + ACCESSIBILITY

Expanding Discovery

From hands-on workshops to interactive exhibits, our STEAM programs continue to evolve, providing participants with immersive experiences that spark curiosity, foster critical thinking, and inspire the next generation.

MOXI Kids Museum Advisory Committee

In 2024, MOXI launched its first Kids Museum Advisory Committee (KMAC) as a way of capturing kids’ voices, ideas, and imagination in the museum’s programs, elevating youth ownership of our programs and exhibits, and engaging youth members as ambassadors of the museum. KMAC’s first cohort of 10 members between the ages of 6 and 10 helped evaluate and brainstorm new exhibit ideas.

Brainstormed ideas for new exhibits and Innovation Workshop programming

It has been inspiring to witness the passion these kids have for MOXI. I'm so proud to empower their ownership of our programs and exhibits, and establish kids as a central voice in carrying out the museum's mission."

Public Programs + Events

STEAM Programs in Action

MOXI’s public programs continued to flourish with fun daily programming ranging from Pi Day, and Worldwide Day of Play, to week-long STEAM celebrations including Robotics week, and Engineering week. We also expanded popular Toddler Tuesday programming to a weekly 9 AM timeslot, better accommodating nap schedules and welcoming our youngest innovators who might miss out during school hours.

Outside of the museum, MOXI brings STEAM learning into the community by participating in school Science Nights and a variety of community events such as Earth Day, Dia de los Niños, and more.

Power of MOXI

Spring Brunch + Learn

The Power of MOXI brunch brought together over 100 friends for a joyful gathering among the exhibits. Local nonprofit leader and current MOXI board member Donna Barranco Fisher highlighted how accessibility and inclusion create pathways for all children to flourish and discover their potential. The event also featured Deena Ferro, owner of Kyle’s Kitchen, and her son Kyle, both passionate advocates for accessibility, in a moving video.

This event raised over $68,000 to support MOXI’s Accessibility Fund.

Thank you to Co-Chairs Amber Kaplan + Angie McGrath, and the rest of the committee: Graham Bell, Donna Barranco Fisher, Marcia Cohen, Angela Krablin, Mieko Kusano, Alixe Mattingly, Kristen Nesbit, and Megan + Shane Trigg.

Circumstances can be limiting, but a child’s heart and mind are limitless. While we may not be able to change those circumstances, we can make sure this museum can help those children discover their potential."

Donna Barranco Fisher, local nonprofit leader and MOXI board member

MOXI@Night

What a Wonderful Night!

MOXI@Night, presented by Bank of America, transformed the museum into an evening of wonder and whimsy on Saturday, October 5, guiding guests through playful, immersive experiences. The event was a great success, surpassing fundraising goals and raising over $375,000, which helped us meet and exceed a matching gift from the Hearst Foundations for the museum’s STEAM education and accessibility initiatives.

MOXI@Night supports the educational programs and accessibility initiatives that help MOXI empower kids –  and the kid in all of us – to prepare for the world of tomorrow.

Special thanks to event Co-Chairs Austin Lampson and Kate Shrout, and the rest of the committee: Robert Forouzandeh, Robin Gose, Jill Levinson, Kate MacNaughton, Cáitrín McKiernan, Susan McMillan, Teddy Muller, Ashley Nichols Lees, Robyn Parker, and Erin Sanchez.

Of course MOXI surpassed its goals given how hard-working, highly impactful, and popular the organization is with the Santa Barbara community. We are proud to sponsor their great programming once again."
